March Meditate & Mingle: Start Your Day with Mindfulness and Connection in Durham

Mar 6, 2026 | Emotional Wellness

In the “helping” professions, we spend the majority of our days pouring our energy, empathy, and expertise into others—often until our own reservoirs run dry. Whether you are a clinical therapist, a dedicated educator, a non-profit leader, or a healthcare administrator, the emotional labor required to support your community is immense. Without intentional space to recharge, this commitment can lead to a specific type of professional burnout that makes even the most passionate individual feel disconnected. While the Research Triangle is full of the standard networking event focused solely on business cards and elevator pitches, Abhaya Wellness wants to offer something deeper: a space where professionals can connect through shared wellness rather than just shared industry.

At Abhaya Wellness, we believe that “fearless wellness” isn’t a solo mission; it starts with a supportive community and a consistent mindfulness practice. We recognize that to be truly effective for others, you must first be resourced and regulated yourself. That is why we are inviting you to our next Meditate & Mingle on Thursday, March 19, 2026, right here in Durham. This is a dedicated morning for you to ground your nervous system through guided meditation before connecting with peers who truly understand the weight, and the beauty, of the work you do.

Why Mindfulness Matters for Helping Professionals

Event in Durham north carolina

While we often recommend mindfulness to our clients, we sometimes forget that the benefits are just as profound for the provider. Research suggests that integrating a mindfulness practice into your daily routine can significantly improve your quality of life both in and out of the office.

Participating in guided meditation can help:

  • Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Deactivating the “fight or flight” response triggered by a heavy caseload.
  • Strengthen Emotional Regulation: Helping you stay centered during difficult client interactions.
  • Improve Focus and Sleep: Clearing the mental “clutter” that keeps us awake at night.
  • Physical Benefits: Studies even suggest mindfulness can lower blood pressure and improve immune system performance.

Meet Your Guide: Matt O’Connor

The morning’s guided meditation will be led by Matt O’Connor, LCMHC, LCAS, CCS, the founder and CEO of Abhaya Wellness. Matt brings over a decade of experience in mental health and addiction recovery, holding a Master’s degree in Contemplative Psychotherapy from Naropa University.

Matt is deeply passionate about the intersection of clinical excellence and mindfulness. As a clinician who has worked in everything from wilderness therapy to intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), he understands that for a program to be effective, the people running it must be resourced and connected.

Community Connection and Networking in Durham, NC

After the guided meditation, we transition into the “Mingle” portion of the morning. This is an optional opportunity to network and build a Community of Care.

Many professionals in Durham work in silos. This event is a chance to break those walls down. Whether you have direct client contact or work in a supportive administrative role, your presence adds value to our system of care. There is no commitment to attend every month—just come as you are when you can.

About Abhaya Wellness

At its core, Abhaya Wellness is built on the belief that recovery and mental health care should be as courageous as the individuals seeking it. The word “Abhaya” is Sanskrit for “fearlessness,” and we pair that with a commitment to “Wellness”—which we define not just as a state of being, but as an active, ongoing process of learning and engaging in behaviors that lead to optimal health.

Located in the heart of Durham, NC, Abhaya Wellness is a clinically owned and operated practice. This distinction is vital; it means that our leadership is comprised of therapists who prioritize clinical integrity and client outcomes over corporate quotas. Our founder, Matt O’Connor, built this organization to redefine what it means to feel truly supported in the Research Triangle.

What Makes Our Approach Different?

We aren’t a “one-size-fits-all” clinic. We believe that a community of care is built one intentional connection at a time. Our services are designed around three foundational pillars:

  • Mindfulness-Inspired & Clinically Driven: We blend evidence-based therapy modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with mindfulness-based relapse prevention. This “contemplative” approach helps clients stay grounded while doing the difficult work of addressing trauma and substance use.
  • Gender-Responsive Programming: We have created the area’s only gender-responsive, small-group Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). By creating separate spaces for men and women, we foster a higher level of safety and vulnerability, allowing for more targeted discussions on gender-specific trauma and societal pressures.
  • Systems-Oriented Care: We don’t just look at the individual; we look at the systems around them. We believe in supporting individuals, groups, families, and couples collectively to ensure that the progress made in our office translates to long-term stability at home.

At Abhaya Wellness, we encourage our clients (and the professionals we partner with) to be fearless in their clinical work. We provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can align your recovery with your personal values, goals, and preferences. Whether you are looking for a trusted “Suboxone clinic near me” or a deeply compassionate group therapy practice, our team is dedicated to providing continuous, collaborative care that respects your unique journey.
